Question:
I’ve been natural for 3 years and I can’t seem to not get single strand knots, how do I prevent them and what’s the best way to keep my ends moisturized in between washes?
Estah Speaks:
Question:
What suggestions do you have for hair care and exercising? What steps should I take during and after a workout?
Estah speaks:
I’m not sure if you’re Loc’d or Loose/Natural, but If your hair is loose natural, it may be better for you to put large cornrows, or twist in your hair while working out. Tie your hair down with a cotton scarf or bandana to absorb the sweat from your scalp during the work out. After your done working out, you should use a blow dryer to remove the remaining moisture from your hair and then style your hair as usual.
If you’re Loc’d tie your hair down with a cotton bandana during your workout and then use the blow dryer to remove the excess water from your hair. If your Locs are long, put them in a ponytail and then wrap your head with a cotton bandana. Use the blow dryer to remove any excess water from your scalp. This will help prevent some of the puffing that can occur at the root of your Locs.
Have a blessed day!
Question:
I am transitioning from a perm to natural and am trying to decide between the “big chop” or continuing the transition, what should I do?
Estah Speaks:
Transitioning from relaxer (perm) to natural is a process that requires a lot of patience. Be very careful if you are trying to transition without doing the big chop. Remember, relaxed hair is weaker than natural hair and can break if handled incorrectly during this process. Speaking of the big chop, please, DO NOT cut off all of your relaxed hair, if you are not ready to deal with your natural hair. If you’re that sister who wants to rock your short Brush Cut or very low Chop, then the big chop will work for you. If you are not sure about your hair after the chop, I recommend that you wait until you have approximately three inches of new growth. Allowing your new growth to get to three inches will give you more styling options. One final thought, if you are reluctant to rock your short length, you can put Extension Braids, Sew- In, or a Rod set until you achieve a length you’re more comfortable with. Keep researching for more styling options or visit a licensed Cosmetologist that specializes in natural hair to assist you with your decision. I hope this information helps.
Have a blessed day!
People are always curious about the name of my business. They call me Estah because that’s the name of my salon. My name is La Tonya Watson-Woodruff, but I answer to Estah, La Tonya, and Mrs. La Tonya.
The name of my business came from Queen Esther in the bible. I chose the name Esther because Queen Esther was beautiful and courageous. There was no question about the beauty of Esther that’s why she was chosen to be in a “beauty pageant” to see if she would become queen. Although, they chose her because she was beautiful, they recognized that she still needed to go through a series of beauty treatments before she could be presented to the king. She had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics. I see your beauty when you come in my salon; we are refining your beauty to make you presentable for the world.
The spelling and pronunciation of the name came because I had to add the southern momma and grandma twist on it. My momma and grandma couldn’t say Esther for nothing in the world! They said what came natural for them, Estah. It is in loving memory of Melonese and Lula Mae that I affectionately say Estah and not Esther.
